Der Golem 1920 (Summoning Astaroth and waking the Golem)

This is an excerpt from the 1920 silent movie Der Golem by Paul Wegener. 5 minutes into this clip the The Rabbi is beginning the process of waking the Golem to life. First by summoning the demon Astaroth. A lot of beautiful scenes here with smoke and text coming out of the demons mouth.

As this golem grew, it became increasingly violent, killing gentiles and spreading fear. Some versions have the golem eventually turning on its creator or attacking other Jews.
